Toledo City’s Schools Division kicked off this year’s Division Schools Press Conference with a grand opening program at the Toledo City Sports Center earlier today, February 7.
Campus journalists from secondary and elementary schools, accompanied by their school paper advisers and teacher-coaches from both public and private institutions in the division, actively participated in this event.
This conference aims to help the next generation of journalists strengthen their journalistic skills as it promotes responsible journalism and free expression across various media platforms (print and digital).
Dr. Joseph Irwin A. Lagura, the Schools Division Superintendent, delivered an inspiring message, expressing gratitude to the teachers for their dedication to educating the young minds of aspiring journalists. He urged them to continue nurturing and honing the journalistic skills of the students, emphasizing the importance of spreading truthful news over fake news.
In conclusion, Dr. Lagura extended his appreciation to Toledo City Mayor for her unwavering support for all the initiatives of the Schools Division. He also congratulated in advance the various committees tasked with overseeing tomorrow’s contests.
Mr. Joshua Rizaga, speaking on behalf of City Mayor Marjorie Perales, conveyed gratitude to the Mayor and the members of the Local School Board for approving the budget for the Department of Education’s upcoming activities. He expressed hope for success at the Regional Level, highlighting the municipality’s commitment to rewarding the winners and their coaches.
Tomorrow, February 8, young campus journalists will vie in various categories at Luray II National High School, Toledo National Vocational School, North City Central School, and South City Central School. Each category will declare five winners, with the top three earning the opportunity to compete at the Regional Schools Press Conference (RSPC) from February 24 to 27 in Siquijor.
Under the theme “The Journalist’s Heart: Forging Truth in a Digital World,” this year’s event underscores the essential role of journalists in upholding truth in the digital era. It emphasizes the necessity for journalists to be vigilant, discerning, and dedicated to providing accurate and reliable information to the public.
Organized by Mrs. Jesyl C. Ruiz, Education Program Supervisor in English, and Mrs. Jovelyn C. Quindao, Education Program Supervisor in Filipino, this annual endeavour promises to showcase the talent and dedication of Toledo City’s young journalists.
